Dress Warm This Winter

Written on June 12th, 2010 by Larryno shouts

Edward J. Vassallo, Ready Coordinator for the Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management, provides the following tips on on how to keep warm while venturing out in the cold: Dress warmly in layers and stay dry. Wear hats, scarves, and water-repellent coats. Wear mittens instead of gloves; theyll keep your hands warmer. Cover your mouth. Protect your lungs from extremely cold air by covering your mouth. Dont overdue do it. Stretch before you go outside. Take your time while shoveling snow or pushing a car. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. And walk carefully on snowy, icy sidewalks! Wind Chill makes you get colder faster, as the wind carries away heat from the body. Make sure small children stay warm – especially babies. Babies will get colder much faster than adults. Frostbite is frozen body tissue, usually skin. It affects the extremities first: fingers, toes, ears, and the tip of the nose. The skin might lose feeling, or look white, pale, hard or waxy. As the area thaws, skin may turn red, blue or purple. Skin can also swell or blister. The victim may also feel tingling, burning or severe pain as the frostbitten tissue thaws. Children lose body heat faster than adults, so they can get frostbite faster.

Organize Your Coat Closet

Written on February 22nd, 2010 by Hayden Mulzano shouts

Aside from its original purpose, the place where you keep your coats is likely to do double duty as the home of many other things that probably don\’t belong there. This mess of miscellaneous items may make it nearly impossible to find the coat you need when you need it. Many of us feel completely overwhelmed at the prospect of reorganizing this catch-all space. Don\’t panic! Although finding even an inch more space in your already crammed closet may seem an impossibility, it can be done.

A good place to start is to actually make a list of the things you dislike about the coat closet. Are you overly frustrated by the growing pile of footwear? Do you have to pull almost everything out to find a matching pair of shoes? Are wet snow boots piled on to the mountain of shoes? This can leave you with a mildew smell that can permeate everything in the closet, including your nice, wool coats. Perhaps you have resorted to plastic drawers in the past and are now finding that you can\’t remember what\’s in them, and can\’t open them enough to see.

It could be a good idea to have more than one rack for coats, if the coat closet is tall enough there is no reason why you can\’t have two levels of coats to open up some storage space. If the top bar is slightly out of reach you can easily get a hanger retriever in order to reach. It will not cost much and you will benefit from double the storage space.

A storage area that contains many short jackets and coats, or kids\’ outerwear, can probably accommodate an extra bar on which to hang these items, even if the the ceiling is only the average eight-foot height. If you need less room for coats but more room for accessories, a bar on either side of the closet may help you store items such as handbags, footwear other than boots, throws, and scarves. This will free up space in the back of the closet for drawers, shelves, or other storage devices. Reusable grocery or tote bags as well as other items that tend to accumulate on the floor can be hung on handy hooks.

If you have drawers in your coat closet try to get some clear plastic ones, so you can determine what is inside each without having to open them. Perhaps have baskets for certain items like hats, scarves, gloves etc. You can use vacuum storage bags to keep bulkier items like quilts stored in as small a space as possible. These vacuum bags work by removing all of the air from the bag once the item is inside, making large things such as quilts extremely small.

Cedar coat hangers are good if you find that your closet is prone to moisture, mildew or unpleasant odors. Taking the time to organize this space will help every day to go more smoothly.

Winter Jacket – Bundle Up Without Sacrificing Style

Written on June 2nd, 2010 by Alison Pooleno shouts

Winter has come, and if you have not done so already it may be time to consider buying a winter jacket. Shorter days and longer nights – cold wind, rain and snow – all requiring that you bundle up when going outside. There are so many different options for you to choose from that it might be difficult for you to settle on just one. Let’s look at what you need to keep in mind when searching for the best jacket to wear.

Functionality – The most important part of the winter jacket is that it is functional. It is an important wardrobe for the winter month, especially for those of us who live in the coldest area of the world. If it rains a lot in your region, for instance, or if you experience a lot of snow, you will want to get the heaviest jacket possible.

Made for your activities – There are some that are catered to those of us who love to ski and snowboard.

Fashionable – A very important part of purchasing a winter jacket is that you get one that is fashionable. Winter is one of the longest seasons of the year, so, it’s important that you get a jacket that fits well with the other pieces in your wardrobe so you can look attractive year round. Just because it’s Winter doesn’t mean you have to dress down. In fact, some winter jackets are quite stylish.

When you want to get a new jacket for winter, it’s best to buy it right after winter because stores will be trying to empty their inventory, meaning there will be tons of sales. Each spring, department stores are trying to desperately get rid of their winter inventory, so, it’s a great idea to check there at the end of Winter for deals.

For the cold months, jackets made for winter are a must for everybody.
