The Navy Pea Coat – The Timeless Classic That Keeps You Warm And Looking Good

Written on July 29th, 2010 by David E. Considineno shouts

Timeless, iconic and classic can all describe the pea coat, but I’d prefer to use reliable. I’ve had mine for the past 6 years and it still beats off the snow, rain and wind in the breezy city. But it looks razor-sharp too, working well with most anything such as a suit or sweater, jeans or slacks. It’s reliable because it keeps you warm, makes you look fine and lasts a lengthy time, perfect for the during the winter.

The original pea coat was first crafted for European sailors in the navy during the early 19th century. The US Navy began to issue them in the earlier 20th century and continue to do so. In 1980, they changed the color to black. The design hasn’t changed far over its history, maintaining the wide lapels, double breasted style, slash pockets and buttons etched in with a ship’s anchor. Made with worsted wool, it’s very durable, easily providing warmth and shelter from winds and rain. You can flip up the collar for added protection.

The weight of the Navy issued coats are heavier than newer designs, but think of it as a mini work out when walking around. Personally, I like the classic style, mine being from 1963, but I also had it tailored, narrowed at the waist. The traditional pea coat tends to be box like.

Since pea coats have a distinct look and have been around a long time, you can always find numerous different styles made by several high end designers. These tend to cost much more but will offer you something in a different color or high quality material or different look. They’re always made from wool and even blended with cashmere. Don’t go cheap with a pea coat, however, because it was designed to last and not really be tossed aside like a fickle fashion trend.

Some things to avoid are styles that are as well long, particularly if you’re medium height because it’ll make you look shorter. Go for something that is no longer than mid thigh. Also, choose darker colors, such as navy, dark or grey because they will go with most anything, at the office or for the weekend.

So you certainly don’t need to be a sailor to wear a pea coat anymore. They’ve become part of American style and tradition. Pea coats will never be a temporary trend found in a fashion rag, but a lengthy term investment for your winter wardrobe. There are always good options available and it’s a personal preference if you want the traditional, Navy look or something with a modern edge. It’s just going to get colder out there so we need to look fine and stay warm. And when you step out there, wear it proudly.

The Wishing, performing Winter Coat, live on the 11th of July, 2010, Dataran PJ. Lyrics: I love to wake up to the ring tone of my Skype A fresh cup of coffee sitting by my side I know this call is gonna be good It’s always good to hear from you I know it’s late, but it’s okay Three AM doesn’t mean a thing to me When I get to hear your voice It’s always good to hear from you Because over there it snows You know back home it won’t And it’ll be eight long hours ’til we see the same sunrise And if you’re feeling cold Just close your eyes and know That if you think of me I’ll be your loving winter coat I love to watch you blowing kisses to me on my webcam You know I’ll tell you that you’ll always be my ten Oh god I miss those pouty lips It’s always good to hear from you And I’m marking the days on my calendar ’til this torturous wait is over And you’re safely back in my arms I’ll never let you go, but I’ll pray for now

Top Coat Styles This Winter

Written on July 12th, 2010 by Amado Nasonno shouts

It’s that time of year again where wearing a warm winter coat is essential! It’s not really always easy finding a good styled coat to wear throughout Winter, so here are some style tips on getting the best coat for you!

Pea Coat – This traditionally men’s style coat is open in lots of interesting and attractive variations for women. It typically is shown with oversized buttons, larger lapels, and sleeves that might be full length or cropped depending on the designer. Look for this style in higher quality wool for maximum protection, but don’t settle for traditional black or brown if you want something more flashy. Many designers are offering warm and comfortable pea coats in a variety of colours including bright yellow, hunter green, wealthy purple, and other eye-catching shades.

Lightweight Feminine – This style can be seen in a variety of lengths and fabrics, ranging from mid-thigh down to mid-calf and in fabrics as diverse as nylons, cotton blends, and polyesters. If you want to go ultra-feminine, choose a style that is lightly gathered with a slight A-line shape and ruffled lapels; a tie belt is actually much better as it allows you to emphasise your waistline and show off your sexy curves.

Double Breasted – A classic coat style that is much more popular than ever this season thanks to its practical styling and exceptional fine looks. It’s open this year in a range of colours from the traditional darker colours to striking jewel tones like greens, reds and blues. Look for a double breasted coat to have heavier, warm construction that frequently includes a turned-up neckline for extra protection against the cold. The flared look is also popular this year, giving your curves a bit of extra emphasis without sacrificing anything in terms of comfort and warmth.

Duffle Coat – Very practical and very warm, but you don’t have to sacrifice style entirely with this type of coat. Brighter colour coates or contrasting hood liners will help add some flash colour to the dismal weather as well as keeping you warm. It’s a great way to balance comfort and warmth with just enough fashion and style to keep you feeling interesting, exciting, and the centre of attention.

With so numerous styles out there – make sure you choose one that you will enjoy wearing through the Winter season!

Dark Pea Coat

Written on June 8th, 2010 by Peter S. Houserno shouts

A dark pea coat is a necessity in most regions of the United States, even in the deep south it is still handy to have one hanging in the closet only in case. There is always a chance no matter where you live in the United States that you may need a good coat. Warm coats can be found in numerous styles and textiles to serve any taste.

A traditional black pea coat is always made out of wool. These completely lined coats had outer shells made from wool. These coats are still very much in style today and are typically made for dress wear. One can be made from other natural materials as well. Leather and lambskin are favorites. Whether or not to use animal skins is always in the media. There are extremely elaborate materials used to fashion a coats, created from animal’s fur. There are synthetic materials that can be used to fashion a them as well. Some of these synthetic materials are very high tech and can easily outperform the natural materials for thermal properties and weather resistance.

It is entirely dependent on where the coat will be worn as to which type to choose. For clear reasons, one that will be used in extremely cold wet weather would be best made from a material that is impervious to the cold and wet.

A wool coat would not be the best option for the most harsh conditions. There are some regions of the United States where the weather is so mild a black pea coat can be choosing purely for aesthetic purposes and does not really have to really be weather resistant. The costs for the purchase vary and greatly depend on the style and material that it is made from.

A decent dark pea coat that will keep the user Warm can easily be had for around fifty dollars, which is a baseline coat, for a much more extravagant style the costs could easily run into the thousands. Most of these show pieces that cost into the thousands are more an investment, and rarely are they used in foul weather; they are used more as a status symbol than a normal black pea coat.

Long Pea Coat

Written on June 6th, 2010 by Maurice D. Yamamotono shouts

The purchase of a long pea coat is not a casual one. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the plethora of choices available in stores. More often than not, dull colors and unflattering cuts are chosen when people buy coats. The length of a coat is important when you’re looking for flattering winter wear.

Generally, a long pea coat should be no more than two inches shorter than your skirt if you’re the type to wear skirts in cold weather. For most people, a coat that ends at the knee or slightly above it makes for a flattering appearance. A mistake would be to get a coat that ends more than 2 inches below the knee as it makes the wearer look dumpy and bulky.

You must be aware that not all women are shaped from the same mould. What works for your friend may not really look so good on you when you buy long pea coats. Be honest with yourself and the shape you have.

If you’re pear-shaped, an A-line cut would suit you best. On the other hand, curvy women look their best in long pea coats that are belted to show off their figure. If you have a generous figure, a long, “dressing-gown” coat is extremely flattering. A double-breasted pea coat with crisscrossed lapels minimizes generous curves. Color is one of the things you can play around with when shopping for flattering winter wear too.

Don’t forget to make sure that whatever coat, color or cut you select is the right size for you. It pays to try on the coat before buying it to make sure it will fit over bulky clothes without stretching or pulling under the arms. You should be able to sit down in the coat as well as do up its buttons easily. The sleeves should always end below the wrist bone, or even extend halfway up the back of your hand while the collar should sit nicely toned. As you can see, buying a new long pea coat is no child’s play. A couple of extra minutes of effort can set you up for a lifetime of comfortable winter wear.
