Do I Need Bag Gloves For Bag Work?
Heavy bag gloves can help protect your hands from the vigors of training. I had scraped up knuckles the first time I worked out on the heavy bag.
Gloves for the bag are meant for training. They are for use on the bag not your opponent. They are not very padded and protect you while working out on a bag but not your opponents face!
Hand wraps can be used with bag gloves but you will want to size your gloves accordingly. Gloves that are heavy will help to get you used to the rigors of boxing.
Hand wraps can add stability for your wrist however. Once you start ground fighting you’ll have less wrist support than in boxing gloves, so you do need to train your wrists.
Traditional Boxing Gloves
Should I use boxing gloves for the heavy bag workout or do I need bag gloves? It is up to you. There are some pluses and minuses to both.
Although it is alright to use 16 ounce gloves on the bag, it will wear and tear your gloves. That is a plus for using bag gloves.
When you use the heavy bag gloves you end up degrading them a little bit. So, you end up lessening the life of the gloves when you use them often on the heavy bag.
Construction
The bag gloves are leather or vinyl. They have enough padding to protect your knuckles. Again there is not enough to use them as a sparring glove.
The heavy bag is designed to optimize power and endurance so that is why it has little give. Therefore, you will need to be able to hit the bag with force and not worry about getting injured.
Since the heavy bag is hard and heavy, you obviously need to hit it hard as well. It will not give so in order to punch it hard without getting hurt, you need protection.
Other Workouts
Bag gloves are useful for other workouts too such as hitting the double end bag or focus mitts. They cannot be used for sparring, however because they are too light to be safe.
As for MMA gloves, it is best not to use them on a heavy bag since they are not intended at all for this type of training. You will end up wearing out the gloves prematurely and the finger free nature of the gloves presents a serious risk for an injury on a heavy bag. As such, don’t use your MMA gloves for this purpose.
What To Purchase
When purchasing heavy get the ones with the most adequate protection. Avoid the ultra-thin ones as they just do not offer enough support.
Look for durable heavy gloves. Stay away from the thin gloves. Leather is the best option but vinyl will work. You’ll just need to replace them sooner.
I recommend the UFC heavy bag gloves, the Century heavy bag gloves and Bad Boy heavy bag gloves. I have had experience with all of these, and you could choose any of these with confidence.
