I can totally see that your heart is in the right place.
But the truth is that “breeding” is not the problem. The problem is breeding for a made up standard of confirmation which is not only ridiculous and pointless but the very reason why we have so many sick dogs these days.
There was a time not too long ago when breeding produced healthy dogs with incredible talents. That is because dogs were bred for what they can “do” rather than what they “look like”.

The fact that you were able to giggle during this very disturbing and TRUE documentary (just look up the staggering numbers of genetically sick dogs these days) shows me that you have a long way to go before you can consider yourself a member of the human race.
Just because you walk on 2 legs alone is not proof of humanity. Compassion for beings other than yourself is.
Your lack of compassion quite frankly makes me sick. PLEASE do not respond because I don’t want you here.
@freakkydeathbat
“Culling” means “KILLING” no matter how many dog show fanatics try to call a spade anything other than what it is…
You being a .dog show fanatic I am not at all surprised at your callous and deceiving post.
“Culled” simply means to remove an animal from the breeding program, not neccessarily kill it. And while that breeder may seem cold, she does have a point. Euthanasia is better than being a fighting dog. She could place the pup in a pet home but perhaps pet homes don’t want them. Rescue might take them but of course they would turn around and demonize her for letting even one of her dogs end up in rescue.
I had to pause this when the started talking about Eugenics and Nazis so I could compose myself. While neither of two subjects are the slightest bit funny, neither is sick dogs btw, this documentary has brought me close to giggles a few times. From the ridiculously over the top music in the beginning to the incredibly full of himself RSPCA vet. I can’t believe there are so many stupid people that will blindly believe this garbage. I’m still waiting for any evidence of their accusations.
“Hybrid vigor” is a very true term. It’s basic genetics. The more limited a gene pool is, the higher likelihood there is for defects. The more diverse a gene pool is, the greater the likelihood there is for dominant, healthy traits to surface while simultaneously subduing recessive, problematic traits. Inbreeding didn’t work for the royal families of Europe, why would it work with dogs? Stop breeding for looks and start breeding for health and purpose again.
@bealemoment
This is NOT peta propaganda…
In fact you are in complete agreement with the program if you pay attention.
No one said anything about stopping responsible breeding.
What we all need to stop is this insane quest to produce ever more bizarre looking animals for fashion sake.
Breeding for function and health is the answer as you said so yourself.
This is just HSUS and PETA propaganda. Hybrid vigor is a myth as is hybrid degradation. Mutts have these problems too. At least with a pedigreed dog, you know what to look out for and treat it. You can reduce the defect by responsible, selective breeding.
I now watched this whole documentary and I can honestly say that, even regardless of all the horrific health problems with all these breeds, the English are… slightly strange. Sure, we (Dutch) have dog shows and undoubtedly there are equally crazy people showing unhealthy dogs there, but I’ve just been googling different Dutch and English dog shows and good grief! It’s like the difference between an amiacable night out with friends and accompanying Her Majesty to the opera.
Screw breeding and purebreds. Adopt a mutt from the shelter — much better dog, fewer issues. And just look at the human example: Royalty is inbred, and those people are totally messed up. Purebred is BS. Dog shows are crap. Crufts should be outlawed. The less purebred a dog is, the better.
That’s actually not true, there is a lot of new evidence to show that dogs were not directly evolved from wolves. It’s the same thing as how humans are related to monkeys but not direct ancestors of them.
agrre that older lady at the end just said that if the dog does not have a ridge kill it and is saying the younger vets are wrong for not wanting to put the helathy puppy down
I agree with the orginal purpose with breeding! But then it went for a turn for worst! I hate standards for breeds. Don’t they know there is no prefect dog and do they understand or care about the health issues that are cuased by breeding! I mean i liked the orginal GSD so cute! Also they forgot to mention rage syndrome in springer spaniels! My dog we had when i was a baby had it!
Wtf? That old lady at the end talked about culling a perfectly normal, healthy puppy, just because of the absence of a DEFECT, so casually. Someone give her a slap, please.
The real problem is that the fancy places too many bizarre strictures on breeders to breed away from these disorders and distorted body types. Breed standards and dog shows are a problem, but even more of a problem are the closed registry system. Often breeders who breed for health inbreed to produce lines that don’t have these disorders. This usually exposes other deleterious recessive genes, and new genetic disorders become evident. We need to be able to outcross!

And this is why the ancient dogs are the best!

oh my gosh, that interview with the ridgeback breeder was horrific, it disgusted me!
Dogs are not just domesticated and evolved wolves.
